While Nicholas vander Poele, the Niccolo` of the series, is nowhere near as exasperating as an earlier hero of a sequence of novels, Francis Crawford of Lymond, he is intriguing nevertheless.
It is one of her greatest gifts to be able to create a protagonist who can be both fascinating and infuriating. The House of Niccolo` series began with "Niccolo` Rising," a long, complicated, marvelous, chewy book dealing with the founding of a bank (banking in the early Renaissance was far more adventurous than it is today).
